The Izalco Volcano is one of the most iconic landmarks in El Salvador, located just 30 miles west of the country's capital, San Salvador. It is a stratovolcano, which means that it is characterized by its steep, conical shape and explosive eruptions. Izalco erupted continuously from 1770 when it formed until 1958, earning it the nickname of "Lighthouse of the Pacific" as sailors could see it from far out in the ocean. It is still active today as one of the youngest volcanoes in the world.
